Born and bred a Welshman, I moved to Australia to study medicine at the University of Sydney, graduating in 2003.

My pre–medicine path however was an unconventional one, training initially as an academic scientist and attaining a PhD qualification in the molecular mechanisms of the failing human heart through Imperial College, University of London. My post doctorate experience at the Brompton Hospital was under the auspicious direction of Sir Magdi Yacoub; the pioneering heart surgeon. From such experience I was drawn to clinical cardiology and completed physician and cardiology specialty training through the Prince Of Wales Hospital Network. Thereafter I subspecialised in Interventional Cardiology, completing a two year Fellowship at St Vincent’s Hospital, one of Sydney’s most innovative and prestigious academic institutions.

To complete my training I returned to the UK to undertake a further 14 month specialized fellowship as the Senior Cardiology Research Fellow at the Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals. As well as co-investigating over a dozen international clinical trials, my focus there was to gain hands-on expertise in new, minimally invasive technologies for structural heart diseases including atrial appendage occlusion and correction of congenital cardiac lesions. In particular, having learnt transcatheter aortic valve implantation under the expert guidance of Dr David Hildick-Smith, who is one of Europe’s foremost Interventional operators, I’ve more recently been instrumental in establishing and co-directing the TAVI program at the Sydney Adventist Hospital. Lastly, having a comprehensive published track record coupled with a current Staff Specialist position at Westmead Public Hospital guarantees close engagement with the forefront of academic cardiology.

On a more personal note, I’m happiest indulging in good food, wine and photography, whether it be in the northern suburbs or travelling the world with my wife and two young sons.
